Among the broad spectrum of criminal cases he has defended, Bruce has a special interest in the area of sexual assault, sexual interference, indecent act and all charges found under the general category of historical sexual assault. He enjoys an excellent reputation of obtaining superior results for his clients and in many cases has obtained not guilty verdicts at trial and in a significant number of cases, has negotiated a withdrawal of all charges against the accused persons he has represented.
Background
Criminal Lawyer Bruce Karten received his Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree from the University of Western Ontario in 1965, and Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from Western in 1968.
Following his call to the bar in 1970, he established his practice in the Trenton and Bellevillle area. Fourteen years later Mr. Karten began practicing in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), where his criminal law office is located.
From 1978 to 1980 Bruce served as a member of the Legal Aid Area Committee for Hastings County, advising on the merits of various cases requiring Legal Aid.
Bruce has lectured to drug treatment professionals on the law and procedure involving narcotics charges and has made presentations and led discussions at several high schools on the criminal law process. Bruce has also presented lectures to community groups on domestic law in the criminal courts, and has acted as a trial judge at high school Moot court competitions since 2001. In the spring of 2010 Bruce acted as a judge in the final high school competition for the City of Toronto, held at the Ontario Bar Association.Bruce frequently attends continuing legal education programs presented by the Criminal Lawyer’s Association and the Ontario Bar Association in order to maintain and upgrade his skills and to keep current on relevant developments in criminal law. In addition, he maintains professional connections with lawyers in other related areas of the law for consultation and collaboration purposes.
Community involvement
